What is the Halfords Cycle 2 Work Scheme?

The Halfords Cycle2Work scheme is an employee benefit program that allows eligible individuals to purchase a bicycle and related accessories through salary sacrifice. The scheme is designed to encourage cycling as a means of commuting to work, promoting healthier and more sustainable transportation options.

Here's how the Cycle2Work scheme typically works:

  1. Eligibility: Employees who work for an organisation that participates in the Cycle2Work scheme are eligible to apply. It's important to check with your employer to confirm if they offer the program.

  2. Choosing a bike: Once eligible, employees can visit Halfords or a participating retailer to select a bike and accessories. The scheme covers a wide range of bicycles, including electric bikes, as well as safety equipment such as helmets, locks, lights, and clothing.

  3. Salary sacrifice: Through the Cycle2Work scheme, the cost of the chosen bike and accessories is deducted from the employee's gross salary over a specified period, typically 12 to 18 months. This allows individuals to make tax and National Insurance contributions savings, reducing the overall cost of the bike.

  4. Hire Agreement: The employee enters into a Hire Agreement with their employer, outlining the terms and conditions of the scheme, including the repayment period. During this time, the employee effectively hires the bike and equipment from their employer.

  5. Commute to work: Once the bike and accessories are collected, employees can start enjoying their new mode of transportation. Cycling to work not only offers health and fitness benefits but also helps reduce carbon emissions and traffic congestion.

  6. Ownership options: At the end of the salary sacrifice period, employees have the option to purchase the bike outright through a final payment. This payment is typically a small percentage of the bike's original value. Alternatively, some employers may allow employees to continue hiring the bike or return it.

The Halfords Cycle2Work scheme is a fantastic way for employees to access a new bike and equipment while making financial savings. It promotes a healthier and greener commute, contributing to personal well-being and environmental sustainability. It's advisable to check the specific details and terms of the scheme with your employer, as they may have variations or additional benefits specific to their organisation.
